“To make this Shabbat a delight” consider the “SINAI 21” from The Psagot Winery. Scoring a 4.0 from Vivino, this wine is a great value. A blend of Cab Sauvignon and Syrah, it is rich in darker fruits, hints of spice, and well-balanced. Aged not in oak barrels, but with wood chips from French barrels, it is smooth and easy to drink.
The story of the Psagot Winery is quite special. Just north of Jerusalem, 550 meters above sea level, in the Binyamin area, the winery was founded by Yakov Berg over twenty years ago. The location is the very same area where Abraham lived, farmed grapes, and made wine. The earthy, mineral-rich soil produces wines with a distinctive Mediterranean flair, just as it did in biblical times. Today, Psagot can produce over 750,000 bottles a year.
These past 60 days have been like no other. Many employees from the winery are in the reserves, including founder/CEO Yaakov Berg who is in Gaza. Those not serving have provided 24-hour guard duty for local communities and others have had to step in as teachers and other professionals. To say they are hurting for staff is an understatement. Although their doors have been closed to visitors, on Friday afternoons, they open for just a short while to provide locals with a place to come, sit, chat, drink wine, and try to escape for just a short while from the reality of what is happening around them.

Let’s help Psagot Winery prevail in its mission to provide quality wines across the globe while also supporting its community in Israel. This Shabbat, put the “SINAI 21” on your table. Their bottles are easy to spot as each is adorned with a replica of an ancient coin.
As the story goes, while constructing the winery, builders stumbled upon an ancient cave that dated back to 140 BC, when the Hasmonean Dynasty ruled Judea. They were descendants of the Maccabees, the heroes of the Hanukkah Story. First Night of Hanukkah Inside the cave, a coin was found. The front of the coin had the words “For Freedom of Zion” and a picture of a vine leaf. That message could not be more relevant today.
I purchased the Psagot Sinai 21 at Wegmans in Princeton on Rte. 1 South in Lawrenceville, NJ (Nassau Mall). It’s also available at Joe Canals, Total Wine, and many other shops.
