“To make this Shabbat a delight”, consider the PRIVILEGE from the Shiloh Winery. A blend of grapes Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Grenache, and Cabernet Franc it’s rich in cherry with just a bit of spice. Aged in French oak barrels for 6-9 months, it’s a nice compliment for a brisket dinner. Wine Enthusiast has consistently rated this wine from Very Good to Excellent, providing good bang for the buck.
Located in the Samarian Hills of Judea and Samaria, the city of Shiloh preceded Jerusalem as the central worship site of the Israelites. Three thousand years ago it was the capital of the Israelite kingdom, but today it is the home to the Shiloh Winery. As a result of its warm days and cool nights, they are able to produce some of Israel’s most delicious wines.
These days, life at Shiloh has been quite a challenge. Most of their staff were drafted and they have been left with only 2 people. With the help of family and friends they were able to complete the harvest, but it was difficult. Some of their vineyards are located in areas where there was rocket fire, and there are no bomb shelters in the vines! The visitor center is closed and sales are limited to the few open Israeli wine shops. Exporting wine has been a challenge as Israel relies on seaborne trade. Currently, Israel waters are considered a “High Risk Zone” by marine insurers, so premiums have soared. Their situation is not good.
Despite everything, Shiloh’s winemaker, Amichai Lourie, continues to feel that making wine in Israel is truly a PRIVILEGE. He walks the vineyards daily to monitor progress. All decisions made for pruning and harvest come from him; nothing happens without his knowledge and consent. His belief is that any job worth doing, is worth doing well. This Shabbat, please consider putting his wine on your table.
Shiloh wines are easy to spot as their logo is an ox, the symbol for the biblical tribe of Joseph. I made my purchase at TOTAL WINES in Cherry Hill, NJ. It is available at other shops along with the Shiloh Shor Cabernet Sauvignon. The best place to find Shiloh Wines is at: Kosher Wine Warehouse, free Shipping with a purchase of $99. Use the code ISRAELWINEGIRL for 10% off your entire purchase.
