Flam Winery Classico

To make this Shabbat a Delight, consider putting a bottle of Flam Winery’s “Classico” on your table. Produced in the traditional Bordeaux style, this is a blend of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc; with a bit of Petit Verdot and Syrah.  It’s color is a bright rich purple and smells of plum, black raspberry, black cherry, and a little spice and chocolate. This wine is so easy to drink! It is medium to full bodied, rich in tannins, well balanced, and has a lingering finish. It will go nicely with roast beef, roasted chicken, or make a nice sipping wine when relaxing with friends.

Flam Winery is part of the Judean Hills Quartet, the group of four artisanal wineries (Flam, Domaine du Castel, Tzora, Sphera), established in the Judean Hills with the goal of revitalizing the area as a quality wine making region. In ancient times, the Judean Hills were considered the Bordeaux of the Middle East. Grapes were grown on terraces, pressed on ancient presses, and stored in amphora jugs placed in cool caves. After aging they were exported around the ancient world. This all ended with the invasion of the Ottoman Empire and wouldn’t resume till Israel became a state in 1948.

Flam Winery was started in 1998, by brothers Golan and Gilad Flam. They were raised with a love for wine obtained from their father, Yisrael Flam, who served as head winemaker at  Carmel Winery for many years. Golan received formal wine training in Tuscany and Australia and serves as head winemaker, while lawyer brother Gilad, is in charge of business development. Their goal is to consistently produce quality wines which reflect the rich terroir of their vineyards.

Our friends at Flam want us to know that in spite of the war conditions that envelop their country, they are doing the best they can to assist the military and support their community. Their wine grower was called to serve just after Oct. 7th, but the rest of the team jumped in to take care of the vineyards so that the 2023 vintage does not suffer.  They have also provided wine donations for soldiers and are producing wine labels to memorialize wine lovers that have fallen victim in the war.

In late November, Flam Winery, as part of the Judean-Hills Quartet,  initiated and hosted a fund-raising event for Leket Israel, Israel’s National Food Bank, who has been assisting farmers in the South.
