This Shabbat of July 5th, we are featuring a fun wine to enjoy, Shiloh Winery’s Award Winning 2023 Rose. On their website is a quote from King David “Wine gladdens the heart of Man” (Psalms 104:15), which is so true when enjoying their delicious Rose. The color is pale pink, almost salmon, and the bottle’s label, with its palm trees, just lightens one’s mood.
Rose wines, with their pink hues, are made from red grapes. The most common method of production is called “maceration” which involves crushing the grapes and allowing them to sit in their skins for a short period of time, usually just a few hours. Afterwards, the grapes are pressed, fermented, aged for a short time, and then bottled. Most Rose wines are meant to be drunk young, generally within a year or two of harvest, which ensures the freshest flavors and most vibrant wine.
Shiloh’s Rose 2023, was made with grapes harvested in the Fall of 2023, just around October 7th. At that point, most of their farmers were drafted and they had to rely on the community for support. The average age of those who picked the grapes for this wine was 70. They were also picking in vineyards which were under fire, and there are no bomb shelters in the vines.
When it came time for production, there were only 3 people left to make the wine; the winemaker, Amichai Lourie, and 2 others. The production of this wine, under such trying circumstances, was truly an act of love, and Amichai always says “making wine in the Holy Land is his PRIVILEGE”.
This 2023 Rose is bright, crisp, and refreshing. Made from Cabernet Franc, Grenache, and Barbera grapes it has notes of delicious summer fruits; strawberry, cherry, and watermelon, with a bit of grapefruit to add acidity. The grapes were harvested in vines located in the Samarian Hills, the northern part of the Judean Mountains, known for its hilly topography and terra rossa soil that produce quality wines.
