The “War of Roses” continues with Psagot Winery’s 2023 Rose. The Psagot Winery is located in the Binyamin Region just north of Jerusalem. Binyamin is named for Jacob’s youngest son, Benjamin, and the beautiful landscape of the area is known for its hilly terrain, lush valleys, beautiful olive trees, and natural springs. It is therefore no surprise that a beautiful wine should come from such a beautiful location.
Psagot’s 2023 Rose is a delicately floral wine, rich in fruit, and very refreshing. Made from a blend of the varietals Syrah, Mourvèdre, Gewurztraminer, and Sauvignon Blanc, the grapes were night harvested and fermented in stainless steel. It has the aroma of summer melons, citrus fruits, and bright raspberries; and on the palette is fruity and finishes with crisp acidity. It would make a perfect accompaniment to a Shabbat lunch of fresh fish or chicken, with a Mediterranean salad.
These months since Oct. 7th, have been a strain for Psagot. Located in the section of the West Bank under Israel control, they have had to be especially diligent regarding security. This has been quite a challenge when so many of the workers, including the winery’s CEO, have been serving in the IDF on and off for months. Less workers to maintain guard, less to maintain the vines, and less to make the wine; production of this bottle of their 2023 Rose is almost a miracle.
When we think about Rose wines here in the US, often summer fun is what comes to mind. We picture ourselves outside on a patio in the bright sunshine, enjoying a bottle with friends while we relax and chat. While this might be normal here, during the Summer of 2024, this is not the current life in Israel.
This Shabbat, let’s do what we can to support our friends at Psagot Winery by putting their Rose 2023 on your table, and as our friend Gal Yaniv, Pelter’s CEO says “Praying for Better Days Soon”.
