This Shabbat we are featuring “BIN”, a lovely Chardonnay from the Binyamina Winery. Aged in stainless steel, and seeing no oak, this is a well balanced wine that is aromatic with the essence of apple, pear, and grapefruit; and on the palette is crisp, refreshing, and has nice acidity. It is similar in style to Binyamina’s “Moshava Chardonnay 2023’, which is also aged in stainless steel.
The winery’s history dates back over 70 years with grapes farmed in the Binyamina area, but today they source grapes throughout the country. They believe making good wines begins in the vineyard, which is why several are located in the rich soil of the north. Mevo Hama Vineyard is located in the Southern Golan Heights, close to the border triangle of Syria, Jordan, and Israel; and The Tel Phares and Kidmat Tzvi Vineyards are located in the Northern Golan Heights. Let’s hope they remain safe in the coming days.
This week, the Jewish Holy Day of Tisha b’Av (9th day of the Hebrew month of Av), will be observed on Tuesday August 13th. Recognized as a period of mourning, it marks the day in history when both the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem were destroyed. The First Temple, Solomon’s Temple, was destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar in 586 BCE, and the population of the Kingdom of Judah was sent into exile. The Second Temple was destroyed by the Romans in 70 CE, and once again the Jewish people were exiled. Over the years, many other tragedies have occurred on this same date, including Heinrich Himmler receiving approval from the Nazi Party on August 2,1941 (the 9th day of Av), for the Final Solution .
This year, we also mourn the Tragedy of Oct. 7th, and the 1,189 who lost their lives, and 115 still in captivity.
When asked how we can help, our winemaker friends in Israel always answer the same, “buy our wine and pray for better days”. Evidence shows that Ancient Israel had a thriving wine industry which peaked during the period of the 2nd Temple. Destroyed by the Romans, but revitalized in modern times, they now depend on us for their survival.
