This week we are excited to feature the Kerem Red 2022 from Kishor Winery. A traditional Bordeaux style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot; this is a medium bodied wine, rich in fruit, a little spicy on the nose, and a smooth, silky finish.
Kishor is a boutique winery located in Israel’s Upper Western Galilee that produces about 50,000 bottles a year. Its vineyards are located 500 meters above sea level and the soil is Terra Rosa – perfect for growing traditional French varietals. They enjoy the warm days and cool nights of the Galilee, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly and making for wine that is rich in color and aroma.
The Kishor Vineyards and Winery are owned by the village of Kishorit, a community of adults with special needs who live and work in the village’s different production industries. The winery is run by Richard Davis, Professions Manager, and Itay Lahat, Oenologist and Wine Expert. The winery is one of the main industries in the village and Kishorit members are fully involved in the wine production process. They care for and cultivate the vineyard, pick grapes, and with the aid of the expert professionals participate in making Kishor wines.
The Galilee, home of Kishor Winery, has been referred to as “The Tuscany of Israel”, due to its rolling hills, lush greenery, vineyards, and quaint towns. It was recommended as a luxury vacation spot by Conde Nast Traveler Magazine just prior to the Oct. 7th terrorist attack.
Today, there are no visitors and over 60,000 residents have fled to to safer ground. According to the IDF, 6,700 rockets and 340 drones were launched at the area in the past 11 months, taking some 40 lives. Just today (Sept 12th) 15 rockets were sent from Lebanon into the Western Galilee. Though no injuries were reported, the fires that broke out as a result are destroying the landscape.
Let’s support our friends in Israel that continue to make wine under these most trying of circumstances.
We picked up the Kishor Kerem Red at our local wine shop here in Princeton, “The Corkscrew”, located on Huffish Street, just off of Palmer Square. Those of us who live in the area are lucky to have such a beautiful wine shop carrying wines from Israel’s small wineries, so please let’s support them.
Don’t live in the area, then check online at Israel Wine Direct a NYC based distributor providing access to Israel’s boutique wines. Make sure to sign up for their mailing list to be alerted of special promotions. We just took advantage of the Rosh Hashanah 40% discount on some of the Kosher wines using code NEWYEAR5785.
