Looking for Rosh Hashanah wine?

This year, the Jewish holiday of Rosh Hashanah, begins at sunset on Wed. Oct. 2nd and continues through sundown on Friday Oct. 4th. The Hebrew calendar is based on the lunar cycle, which is why the date varies each year.

Rosh Hashanah celebrates the beginning of a new year and is believed to be when G-d created Adam and Eve. In a symbolic measure, “apples” are dipped in honey and served at holiday meals – hoping for a “Sweet New Year”.

A key element of the holiday is the sounding of the shofar (rams horn). Many believe it’s to remind us of the story of Abraham and the near sacrifice of Issac, but another claim is it reminds us of the cry our enemies made when destroying the Temple in Jerusalem in 70 CE.

Perhaps this year, it will serve to the world as a reminder of the sound Hamas Terrorists made when they stormed Israel’s borders and killed 1,139 innocent people, including 36 children, and took some 250 hostages.

Here are a few wines that we here at Israel Wine Girl will be serving at our Rosh Hashanah meals.

Day #1

Shiloh Privilege 2021 – Located in the center of Judea and Samaria, the winery’s location was the original capital of Judea and location of the Ark of the Covenant. (Indiana Jones was looking in the wrong place) This is a medium bodied blend made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, and Grenache all aged in French barrels for 6 months. Earning 90 points from Wine Enthusiast for it’s distinct rich flavor, enjoying this wine is indeed a “Privilege”.

Matar Sauvignon Blanc 2023 – Located in the Golan Heights, next to the Syrian Border, this winery has continued its mission to produce quality wines even under the most arduous of circumstances. This wine is a blend of 85% Sauvignon Blanc and 15% of Semillon grapes, sourced and hand picked from vineyards in the Golan Heights and the Upper Galilee. Fresh, crisp and ready to drink.

Day #2

Psagot Sinai 2023 – The Psagot Winery will forever be thankful to former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo who issued a proclamation indicating the legality of Israel’s position in Judea Samaria. As a show of gratitude, a limited edition wine was named “Pompeo”. Though the Pompeo is no longer available, another delicious blend is SINAI, a fruity balanced wine made from Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz.

Gush Etzion Lone Oak Rose 2023 – This winery is located in the Judean Hills among a cluster of Israeli settlements. The area is remembered for the Kfar Etzion massacre that occurred 76 years ago, when 127 Jewish kibbutzniks were attacked and killed by Arab men from local communities. The wine is light bodied and refreshing, with hints of summer berries.

All wines mentioned can be found at local shops and online at Kosher Wine Warehouse, free Shipping with a purchase of $99. Use the code ISRAELWINEGIRL for 10% off your entire purchase.

Praying for Peace in the Vines, Peace in the Land of Israel,
