Zion Winery Imperial Cabernet Sauvignon 2023

This week we are featuring a traditional cab from Zion Winery, the 6th largest in Israel.  Rated as a “Great Value” by Vivino for its rich fruit flavor, smooth body, and hints of oak, the “Imperial Cabernet Sauvignon 2023”, does not disappoint.

Zion has been making wine in Israel for over 170 years. They started in 1800’s, in the Old City of Jerusalem, as the Shor Family Winery,  but changed the name to Zion after Israel became a state and they moved into the outskirts of the city. The current winemaker, Zvika Shor, is a descendant of the original winery owners and learned the art of wine making from his father. With the help of viticulturist Pini Sarig, he manages vines planted throughout the country, including in the Northern Negev and Golan Heights, and he produces the wine.

The term “Zion” refers to the Jerusalem Mountain (Mt Zion), where King David built his city,.  It is mentioned 152 times in the bible, most often in the books related to the Prophets and in Psalms. Historically, the term was used to describe the people dwelling on Mount Zion, but over time came to signify all people living in Jerusalem.

The name Zion was chosen for the winery to represent the family’s connection to this “Old City”. The original winery cellar backed up to the Little Western Wall in Jerusalem and grapes were purchased from Muslim farmers living in Hebron. The Shor Family spoke Arabic and had a cordial relationship with the farmers that went on for decades. Perhaps this is a symbol of what might again be possible one day.

Zion’s Vineyards are located throughout the country and they are working hard to continue producing quality wines at reasonable prices, despite the difficulties from the war. This year at the Decanter World Wine Awards, their Estate label scored 90 points and is priced at about $15 a bottle, providing great value!  The wines from the Capital label are considered premier and are priced at $20, also providing tremendous value.

We found the Imperial Cab Sauvignon at the Shoprite in Cherry Hill, NJ. The best selection online seems to be from kosherwine.com, There are some bottles available from Kosher Wine Warehouse, free Shipping with a purchase of $99. Use the code ISRAELWINEGIRL for 10% off your entire purchase.
