Galil Mountain Winery “Alon” 2021

This week on the blog, we’re highlighting a lovely wine that is sure to impress—“Alon” 2021 from Galil Mountain Winery. This beautifully crafted blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah delivers a delightful balance of flavors that will captivate both casual wine drinkers and seasoned enthusiasts alike.

Tasting Notes: “Alon” 2021 opens with enticing aromas of freshly picked fruit, setting the stage for a rich yet approachable tasting experience. On the palate, it reveals deep flavors of black cherry, blackberry, plum, and a touch of herbs, all integrated through 12 months in French oak. This aging process enhances the wine’s complexity, making it surprisingly rich in character while remaining light and easy to drink. It’s no surprise that for numerous vintages, “Alon” has earned over 90 points from Wine Enthusiast, and currently boasts a 3.9/4 rating from Vivino for its 2021 release.

A Winery with History and Heart: Galil Mountain Winery was founded in 2000, as a joint venture between Golan Heights Winery and Kibbutz Yiron. Situated in the Upper Galilee near the Lebanese border, Kibbutz Yiron has a rich history, established in 1949 with the goal of reinforcing Israel’s borders. Initially, the kibbutz sustained itself through fruit orchards and a furniture factory, but in the early 2000s, they pivoted towards viticulture, launching what would become one of Israel’s premier wineries.

In 2023, the community faced a difficult challenge, as residents had to evacuate due to escalating tensions and targeted attacks from terrorist. Despite these hardships, Galil Mountain Winery continues to produce exceptional wines, staying true to its commitment to quality and sustainability.

Meet Winemaker Michael Avery: At the helm of Galil Mountain’s winemaking team is Michael Avery, an Australian native who made his way to Israel nearly 20 years ago to work with Golan Heights Winery. In 2018, he transitioned to Galil Mountain Winery, working alongside renowned winemaker Micha Vaadia. Avery brings a wealth of experience, blending technical expertise with a deep commitment to sustainable winemaking.

A Leader in Sustainable Winemaking: Galil Mountain Winery stands out not only for its exceptional wines but also for its dedication to sustainability. The winery was the first outside of California and Washington State to receive sustainable certification from the prestigious LODI RULES program.

To earn this certification, vineyards must undergo rigorous third-party audits and meet high sustainability standards in six key areas:

  1. Business Management
  2. Human Resources Management
  3. Ecosystem Management
  4. Soil Management
  5. Water Management
  6. Pest Management

Few wineries combine premium winemaking with a genuine commitment to environmental responsibility, making Galil Mountain Winery a truly unique player in the industry.
