About the Wine

Human Touch 2021 is a beautifully crafted blend of Merlot (Bordeaux) and Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre (Rhone) — all grown in Israel’s northernmost wine region, the Golan Heights.
Merlot is one of France’s oldest grape varietals, first documented in 1784 and named for the blackbirds (“merle” in French) that loved to eat the grapes. Genetic studies show it is a descendant of Cabernet Franc and closely related to Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec — varietals it blends particularly well with.

Merlot is typically medium-bodied and fruit-forward, with flavors of black cherry, plum, and raspberry, often layered with notes of chocolate, vanilla, and spice. Its soft tannins and velvety finish make it approachable and easy to drink.
Today, Merlot is the second most widely planted grape in the world. It thrived in California during the 20th century, but its popularity took a hit after the 2004 film Sideways, when the character Miles famously declared, “If anyone orders Merlot, I’m leaving. I’m not drinking any f**king Merlot.” This so-called Sideways Effect still lingers in wine culture today.
Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre (often known collectively as GSM) are classic Rhone grapes that thrive in Mediterranean climates. Each contributes its own character to the blend: Grenache adds bright fruit and acidity, Syrah provides spice, minerality, and tannins, while Mourvèdre gives depth and structure.

By combining Merlot with GSM, Yaacov Oryah has created a truly original blend — bold, balanced, and full of vibrant red fruit flavors. As the name suggests, this wine clearly reflects Oryah’s Human Touch.
About the Winery
Ya’acov Oryah has served as winemaker for several well-known Israeli wineries while also building his own highly regarded label. Using both estate-grown grapes and select fruit from trusted growers, he constantly experiments with new techniques and creative blends. Today, his label includes 27 different wines, with an annual production of about 25,000 bottles. Oryah is recognized as one of Israel’s most respected and innovative winemakers.
About the Winemaker

Winemaking was actually Ya’acov Oryah’s second career. His first was managing construction projects — a discipline not so different from blending wines. Just as construction requires assembling diverse elements into a single cohesive structure, Oryah crafts blends from numerous varietals to create something greater than the sum of its parts.
He began his winemaking journey in the early 2000s, co-founding Assif Winery in the desert near Arad, which later became Midbar Winery. Afterward, he served as winemaker for Psagot Winery and today is also helping to launch Pinto Winery, established in 2020.
