To make this Shabbat a Delight, consider putting a bottle of Segal’s Wild Fermentation Chardonnay on your table. This wine is made from 100% Chardonnay grapes grown in the Upper Galilee and aged for 4 months in oak barrels. It is a complex wine which on the nose has aromas of “spring” with fresh pear and sweet honey, and on the palette tastes of crisp apples with a nice acidity. Its name “Wild Fermentation” comes from a process of fermentation utilizing the grapes natural yeast, obtained from the vineyard itself, not from a separately added product.
Segal Winery was founded in 1950 by two brothers that came from a distilling family. In 2001, it was purchased by Barkan Winery, but the name “Segal” was kept. Today, Segal Winery operates as a boutique label within the larger Barkan Company. Under the stewardship of premier winemaker “Ido Lewinsohn”, the goal of the Segal line is to keep the wine making process as “natural” as possible so as to reflect the true Israel terroir. They minimize human intervention both in the vines and cellar by implementing whole cluster pressing and wild fermentation.
Segal, as a part of the Barkan Winery, has been fully engaged in supporting the Israeli community since the events of Oct. 7th. Like many businesses throughout Israel, they have lost staff due to those serving, however as part of a very large company they have the benefit of many resources to draw on. Consequently, they were able to send some of their workers to help other companies in need of agricultural support and have sent workers to assist with services needed for soldiers – preparing meals, organizing supplies, etc. They are also engaged in reconstruction projects related to damage suffered from the vicious attacks at Kibbutz Kissufim, Kfar Aza, and others.
These are difficult times, but our friends at Barkan want us to know that in spite of everything, they remain optimistic and determined to persevere. As a company, they will do everything they can to help their country get through this and prosper. They asked that we share with all of you, their customers and supporters, “Am Israel Chai”!
This Shabbat, let’s join our friends at Barkan, who have rallied together with all the wineries throughout Israel to raise funds, donate food and equipment, and help wherever needed by putting a bottle of Israeli wine on your table.
