The Bin Nun Winery’s goal is to create unique, harmonious, high-quality local wines that inspire passion and a joy for life. I think the Marsalis definitely hits those notes.

The name has a pretty great story behind it. 🎷

The wine was named to honor the Marsalis family, one of the most influential families in the world of jazz—and jazz happens to be one of the winemaker’s passions.

The Marsalis family is often referred to as the “First Family of Jazz.” Patriarch Ellis Marsalis Jr. and four of his sons—Branford, Wynton, Delfeayo, and Jason—each became accomplished musicians, with each bringing his own instrument and musical style to the family legacy.

Hmmm, that sounds much like a great wine blend!!!

Each individual grape varietal brings something special to the final composition, thus creates something greater than the sum of their parts.

Bin Nun‘s Marsalis 2023 is a blend of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Marselan, 16% Merlot, and 8% Sangiovese grapes grown in their vineyards in the Judean Hills. The grapes are hand-harvested and carefully sorted before fermentation, and the wines are then aged for 12–15 months in French oak barrels before blending. The result is delicious!!!!

And the connection between Bin Nun and jazz doesn’t stop with the name. The winery regularly hosts a dedicated musical series called “Jazz in the Vineyard.” 🍷🎶

🎶 About the Winery

Bin Nun is a boutique winery established in 2012 by friends Eddy Gandler, an engineer who became the winemaker, and Dani Yaniv, a medical doctor who became the winegrower. Neither came from a family of winemakers, but both had a passion for wine, and what began as a hobby soon became something much more.

Their first grapes were grown in Dani’s parents’ backyard, and the wine was made in their garage. They had no formal winemaking training at the time, but the results were so good—and so enjoyed by family, friends and neighbors—that they decided to take their hobby to the next level. They purchased land, invested in professional winemaking equipment and sought out some of the best people in the industry to learn from.

Today, Bin Nun is located in Tel Gezer in the Judean Hills, an area with a long history of grape cultivation dating back to the time of King Solomon. Their vineyards are planted in the limestone soil of Kfar Ben Nun, in the Ayalon Valley, where warm days and cool nighttime breezes create an ideal microclimate for growing grapes. The sloped terrain provides excellent drainage, while carefully controlling the number of vines helps produce high-quality fruit.

And there is another fun side to Bin Nun: music! 🎶 The founders have a deep connection to music, and the winery embraces the relationship between wine and music.

Bin Nun Winery is open to visitors on Fridays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. If you find yourself in the area, definitely stop by— you might get lucky and be there for “Jazz in the Vineyard”! 🍷

🎤 About the Winemaker

Edy Gandler, founder and winemaker, has a degree in engineering but followed his passion for wine, receiving formal wine training at Tal Shahar in the Judean Hills.

He was also mentored by American winemaker Louis Pasco, the famous wine consultant who moved to Israel after studying viticulture at UC Davis.

But wine isn’t Eddy’s only passion. Eddy is also a musician who plays both piano and guitar, which makes the connection between Bin Nun, jazz, and the Marsalis family even more meaningful. 🎹🎸

Also involved in the winemaking at Bin Nun is Itzik Lotan, a respected figure in Israel’s boutique wine industry who has worked with several notable wineries.

🍷 Final Sips

Marsalis 2023 is an easy-drinking, fruit-forward red that doesn’t take itself too seriously. It’s approachable, balanced and versatile enough to enjoy with dinner—or simply with friends and good conversation.

And with a name inspired by one of the great families in jazz, maybe this is a wine that deserves its own soundtrack. 🎶🍷
